Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most before a first visit — who’s treating you, how safe it is, and what to actually expect.
What's the difference between a skincare studio like this and a dermatologist's office?
A dermatologist is a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats skin disease, prescribes medication, and performs surgical procedures. YA Skin Studio is a clinical skincare studio — licensed estheticians delivering corrective, non-invasive treatments like chemical peels, microneedling, and DMK Enzyme Therapy, with an APRN medical director providing oversight. We’re built for the maintenance and correction work that happens between medical visits, not instead of them. If something looks like it needs a doctor’s attention, we’ll say so and point you toward one rather than treat around it.
Who actually performs my treatment?
Every treatment is performed by a licensed esthetician, most often Yana A. herself, a DMK Paramedical Therapist of the Year who has been treating Chicago skin since 2014. Clinical protocols like DMK Enzyme Therapy and advanced peels run under an APRN medical director, so the corrective work you’re getting has hands-on experience and clinical oversight behind it. You can meet the full team here.
How do I know a skincare studio is actually safe and legitimate?
A few things are worth checking before you book anywhere: are the practitioners licensed, do they use single-use or properly sterilized equipment, and will they tell you honestly if a treatment isn’t right for you. At YA Skin Studio, that looks like FDA-cleared SkinPen cartridges opened fresh for every client, sterile single-use blades for dermaplaning, and a skin consultation before anything is applied — not after you’re already in the chair. A 5.0 rating across 130+ Chicago reviews is nice to see, but it should never be the only thing you check.
Are results guaranteed, and how soon will I see them?
No responsible provider guarantees results, because skin responds individually, and that’s true here too. What we can give you is the honest range: dermaplaning and HydraDerm show a visible difference the moment you leave, a VI Peel reveals brighter skin within about a week as it finishes peeling, and treatments that work through your own collagen — microneedling and DMK Enzyme Therapy — build progressively over several sessions and keep improving for months afterward. Long-term results come from a plan, not a single visit.
Is there downtime after treatments?
It depends entirely on what you book. Dermaplaning, HydraDerm, and Red Light Therapy have zero downtime — you can go straight back to your day. Microneedling typically leaves mild redness for 24 to 48 hours, and chemical peels can mean anywhere from two days of light flaking to about a week of visible peeling, depending on the peel’s depth. Tell us what’s on your calendar before you book and we’ll help you pick a treatment that fits it.
How often should I plan to come in?
Most of what we do is built around your skin’s natural cell-turnover cycle, roughly every 4 to 6 weeks, which is the rhythm behind facials, HydraDerm, red light add-ons, and most microneedling and DMK protocols. A couple of things run on a different clock: dermaplaning suits a slightly shorter 3-to-4-week cycle, and a single VI Peel is more of a quarterly reset unless you’re running a corrective series. Your esthetician will tell you which rhythm applies to what you’re treating.
Does insurance cover any of these treatments?
No. Facials, peels, microneedling, DMK Enzyme Therapy, and the rest of what we offer are elective cosmetic and corrective skincare treatments, and health insurance doesn’t cover elective cosmetic care, regardless of provider. We accept all major cards plus Apple Pay and Google Pay, and gift cards are available online if you’d rather give — or get — a treatment as a gift.
